A single-phase pad-mounted transformer cannot be selected by kVA alone. The buyer should confirm the primary and secondary system, load, feed arrangement, insulation level, terminal configuration, applicable standard, site conditions, and required accessories before quotation.
1. Confirm the load and rated power
For a single-phase pad-mounted transformer, provide the connected load, expected demand, starting or cyclic loads, future expansion allowance, and the proposed transformer rating. The project engineer or utility should confirm the final kVA selection.
2. Define primary and secondary voltages
State the complete primary system designation, grounding arrangement, and secondary voltage. Avoid listing only a nominal voltage when the line-to-line and line-to-neutral relationship matters. Also identify frequency and whether the unit will be used for step-down or another approved application.
3. Choose radial-feed or loop-feed construction
Radial-feed and loop-feed arrangements have different high-voltage terminal requirements. State the required feed arrangement and provide the utility or project terminal layout. Also confirm dead-front or live-front construction and the required separable connectors, bushings, wells, inserts, and parking stands.
4. Confirm insulation level and taps
Basic lightning impulse insulation level (BIL) must match the selected voltage class and project requirements. Specify the required tap range, tap positions, and whether the tap changer is intended for de-energized operation. Do not assume one BIL or tap arrangement applies to every voltage class.
5. Identify the governing requirements
The purchaser should name the applicable utility specification and standard edition. The IEEE Standards Association lists the approved IEEE C57.12.38-2025 standard as covering certain requirements for single-phase, 60 Hz, liquid-filled, self-cooled, compartmental-type pad-mounted distribution transformers within its stated rating and voltage scope. Confirm the applicable edition and distinguish an active revision project from an approved standard on the official IEEE Standards Association page.
For U.S. projects, energy-efficiency requirements may also apply. Product-standard scope, federal efficiency rules, listing or certification, and utility approval are separate questions and should be confirmed independently for the exact design.
6. List accessories and protection
- Primary fusing and the required protection arrangement
- Load-break switching, where specified
- Surge arresters
- Pressure-relief device
- Liquid-level and temperature indication
- Grounding provisions
- Locks, labels, nameplate language, and paint requirements
7. Provide site conditions
For the single-phase pad-mounted transformer installation, state ambient temperature, altitude, flood exposure, coastal or corrosive conditions, seismic requirements, available pad dimensions, cable-entry details, and any dimensional or noise restrictions.
Single-phase pad-mounted transformer quotation checklist
Send the required kVA, complete primary and secondary voltages, frequency, quantity, radial or loop feed, dead-front or live-front construction, BIL, taps, accessories, applicable standard, destination country, and the project specification or single-line diagram.
Browse the current single-phase liquid-filled pad-mounted transformer range. All listed configurations remain subject to engineering review and the approved project specification.
Common buyer questions
Is a single-phase pad-mounted transformer installed underground?
No. The enclosure is installed above ground on a prepared foundation. Cable entry and foundation details must follow the approved installation drawings and utility requirements.
Can kVA and voltage alone define the equipment?
No. Feed arrangement, terminals, insulation, protection, applicable requirements, and site conditions also affect the specification. Send the project documents so that unresolved details can be identified before comparing quotations.
