Liquid-Filled Transformer Pressure Devices: RFQ Scope Checklist

Liquid-Filled Transformer Pressure Devices: RFQ Scope Checklist

For liquid-filled transformer pressure devices, specify mechanical pressure relief and sudden-pressure detection as separate functions in the RFQ. Then ask the responsible engineer to confirm each device's sensing medium, tank or compartment, mounting arrangement, setting or response characteristic, and alarm or control interface. A line stating “pressure device with alarm” does not establish the complete package. Obtain a device schedule, proposed drawings and a control schematic before accepting the quoted scope.

This guide helps EPC and industrial procurement teams review a complete liquid-filled transformer offer for a North American industrial project. It addresses purchase documents and supply responsibilities. Device selection, protection design and technical acceptance remain with the responsible project engineer and equipment designers.

Specify the function before naming the device

Mechanical pressure relief and pressure-rise sensing answer different questions. A pressure-relief device provides a discharge path when its operating condition is reached. Depending on the selected design, its operation can also produce a visual indication or an electrical signal. Published pressure-relief device data illustrates how switches, discharge shields and seals can be separate configuration choices.

A pressure-sensing sudden-pressure relay detects a rapid pressure rise; it does not provide the mechanical discharge function described above. A documented gas-space relay design detects a sudden increase in gas pressure and provides an alarm output. The 2014 sudden-pressure protection report separately describes under-oil pressure sensing. The offered device must be identified against its intended sensing medium.

An operating contact on a relief device should therefore not be treated as proof of a separate rapid-pressure sensing function. Have the designer state which functions the project requires and identify the equipment proposed for each.

A pressure/vacuum gauge provides a visual pressure indication within its specified range. Do not assume that a gauge also provides mechanical relief or rapid-pressure sensing. If the project requires a gauge, list its range, indication and any requested contacts separately, then confirm the exact offered variant.

Liquid-filled transformer pressure devices: RFQ checklist

Compare quoted functions before comparing accessory counts. In an illustrative bid review, one offer includes mechanical relief with an operation indicator, while another also includes pressure-rise detection. Those offers describe different functions until the responsible engineer resolves the required scope. This example does not describe a supplied HEAKOR project.

Add a focused accessory schedule to the complete transformer RFQ inputs. The schedule below is a purchasing aid; it does not prescribe a protection scheme or universal pressure value.

Pressure-device scope to resolve in the offered transformer package
RFQ item Response and evidence to request
Required function Identify mechanical relief, rapid-pressure sensing and operation indication separately. State included and excluded functions.
Device identity List each proposed device reference and variant, quantity, document revision and any alternative requiring acceptance.
Medium and compartment Identify gas-space or liquid sensing where relevant, the insulating liquid, and the tank or compartment served.
Setting or response Provide the specified operating pressure or sensing-response characteristic, applicable conditions and the designer's confirmation.
Physical arrangement Provide the location and mounting drawing, sealing interface, permitted orientation, discharge arrangement and cable-entry details.
Signals and controls Identify visual indication, contact configuration, switching ratings, terminal references and the approved alarm or control purpose.
Delivery boundary State what is supplied, factory fitted or separately delivered, and who provides the external control interfaces and acceptance documents.

Resolve alarm and trip responsibilities explicitly

An accessory signal does not, by itself, determine the transformer's final alarm or trip action. The 2014 engineering report on sudden-pressure protection discusses relay type, alarm versus trip application and control-circuit design as separate decisions. Its historical survey results should not be read as current market practice or a universal recommendation.

Ask who defines the required action, who supplies each interface and who accepts the complete scheme. The transformer offer should identify its delivered contacts and any included control equipment. The project documents should establish how those outputs relate to the owner's protection and annunciation requirements.

Request the selected contact arrangement, normal and operated states, terminal identification and applicable switching limits. Model-specific pressure-device drawings and contact data show that contact configurations and AC/DC limits can differ. Procurement should obtain the offered component's data and the designer's interface acceptance rather than assume that a contact description establishes suitability.

Keep settings and mounting tied to the proposed design

The pressure setting or response characteristic needs a documented design basis. Mechanical relief operating pressure and a sensing relay's pressure-change response are different specification fields. Ask the equipment designer to confirm the selected values and applicable conditions for the proposed tank and device.

Likewise, request the exact physical arrangement. A flange description or photograph does not establish the mounting, seal, orientation or discharge interface. If a proposed alternative changes one of these details, obtain revised drawings and an engineering disposition before accepting the change. This guide provides no setting, mounting, reset or field-wiring procedure.

Request evidence within the project's applicable scope

Name the required project standards and editions in the RFQ. A cited IEC standard is not a substitute for the applicable North American purchase specification or local acceptance requirements. IEC 60076-22-1:2019 addresses protective fittings on liquid-immersed transformers and reactors, including mechanical and electrical requirements and device-specific operation. Its scope page also identifies certain interchangeability dimensions and type and routine tests. Referencing that standard does not establish compliance of an offered device or transformer.

Use the transformer document request checklist to identify the required datasheet, accessory schedule, outline drawing, control schematic, device instructions and applicable test evidence. Check that references and revisions agree across the proposal. Record deviations and unresolved responsibilities; document availability must be confirmed for the actual offer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pressure-relief contact replace sudden-pressure detection?

Do not assume equivalence. A relief-operation contact and a pressure-rise sensing relay report different device functions. Ask the responsible engineer to confirm the intended protection scope and the proposed equipment.

Does every liquid-filled transformer need both functions?

The required package depends on the transformer design and project specification. Procurement should obtain the designer's selection and owner requirements rather than add or remove a function based on a generic checklist.

Is a gas-space relay interchangeable with an under-oil relay?

Do not treat them as interchangeable from their names. Request the selected sensing medium, variant and mounting arrangement, with confirmation that they match the proposed design.

Does an alarm output mean automatic transformer tripping?

No. The accessory output and the accepted control scheme are separate parts of the package. The project engineer must establish the required alarm or trip action and its interfaces.

What should buyers do when the supplier marks an interface TBC?

Assign an owner, the required document and a resolution point before technical release. Keep the affected scope conditional until the supplier response and engineering disposition are recorded.

Include pressure-device scope in your HEAKOR enquiry

The liquid-filled substation transformer project information provides an enquiry starting point. Pressure-device availability, configuration and documentation require written confirmation for the proposed transformer; this guide makes no accessory-supply or certification claim.

Submit Your Project Specification for review of the requested scope. Include destination, application, transformer type, phase, frequency, kVA or MVA, full primary and secondary voltages, quantity and schedule. Provide a shareable specification link or identify the available documents, requested pressure functions, alarm/control requirements and open points.
