Pad-Mounted Transformer Loop Feed: Three-Phase Switching Scope

Pad-Mounted Transformer Loop Feed: Three-Phase Switching Scope

A three-phase pad-mounted transformer loop feed does not fully specify the primary switching arrangement. Before ordering, ask for the offered one-line diagram, switch-position function schedule, applicable ratings and documented supply boundaries. Match these against the project engineer's approved requirements. Automatic transfer, remote operation and fault interruption must be addressed explicitly rather than inferred from the words “loop feed.”

This guide is for U.S. utility, EPC and industrial procurement teams reviewing a proposed transformer package. It addresses purchasing documentation, not switching, isolation or commissioning procedures. Field work requires qualified personnel, approved equipment instructions and the responsible utility or engineer's procedures.

Define the required function before comparing quotations

Start with the project requirement, then ask each bidder to identify the equipment that addresses it. A quotation can name a connection arrangement without resolving every switching and control function the project needs.

Primary switching arrangements vary. A published manufacturer application guide, page 17.0-10, illustrates different position counts and circuit arrangements. That April 2016 catalog is useful evidence of the distinction, but its configurations and ratings are not current project requirements or HEAKOR product specifications.

For a purchasing review, separate four questions:

  • What primary connection arrangement is required?
  • What switching functions must the offered equipment provide?
  • What protection responsibilities belong to the transformer package or other equipment?
  • What transfer, monitoring or remote-control functions, if any, are included?

Record an answer or an explicit unresolved item for each. Avoid accepting a general phrase such as “standard loop-feed arrangement” as the response to all four.

Match the supplier's drawing to the approved project one-line

Request a configuration-specific drawing with a revision number, not only a brochure illustration. The document should allow the responsible engineer to compare the offered circuit arrangement with the project one-line and identify any deviation.

Ask for a corresponding schedule explaining the function represented by each switch position. Procurement staff should check that this schedule is supplied and referenced consistently; the engineering reviewer determines whether the arrangement is acceptable. A purchasing checklist should never become an improvised field switching sequence.

Keep the project drawing reference, vendor drawing reference and outstanding clarification together. If a quotation is revised, confirm which drawing revision the new price covers. A lower price is not a meaningful comparison when the equipment scope has changed without being identified.

Use a short switching-scope acceptance record

The following record can make unresolved items visible before a purchase order is released. It is a suggested document-control aid, not a prescribed engineering specification.

Review item Evidence to request Acceptance question
Required arrangement Project one-line and offered one-line, with revisions Has the engineering reviewer accepted the stated arrangement?
Switch functions Position/function schedule linked to the offered equipment Are requested functions covered without undocumented assumptions?
Electrical duties Configuration-specific ratings and applicable supporting documents Has the engineer checked them against project duties?
Controls and interfaces Included equipment, interface description and exclusions Is every required control function assigned to a supplier?
Approval and handover Required approvals, document list and responsible parties Who resolves each open item before release?

Add a status beside each row: accepted, clarification required or excluded by agreement. An unanswered item should remain visible; a blank cell should not silently become an included feature.

Keep ratings, protection and controls separate

Request the ratings relevant to the specified duty and let the responsible engineer determine adequacy. Do not select values from an unrelated catalog or treat one rating as evidence for every required function. Where a bid uses broad terms, request the exact equipment designation and the document that supports the claim.

Switching-scope acceptance also does not close the protection review. Keep the pad-mounted transformer fuse-coordination review as a separate approval item, with its own configuration-specific evidence. This avoids a purchasing record in which a switch description appears to answer a protection question.

If the project requests automatic transfer or remote operation, ask for a separate supply statement. Identify the controls, sensing, auxiliary supply, interfaces and interlocks required by the approved design, and whether each belongs to this quotation or another package. Do not assume the transformer supplier is responsible for equipment assigned elsewhere.

Make exclusions and approval ownership visible

Ask each supplier to mark requirements as included, excluded or subject to confirmation. Keep this response beside the price and delivery terms so commercial comparison follows the same technical basis.

For a utility-connected project, identify who obtains the serving utility's acceptance and which documents it requires. A catalog reference, standard designation or previous project cannot replace the approval needed for the actual installation. Procurement should track the required decision and its owner rather than describe an unresolved package as approved.

Before release, reconcile the purchase-order scope, accepted drawings and final clarification list. Agree which technical documents and arrangement drawings must accompany the offered equipment, including any documents supplied by others.

Frequently asked procurement questions

Can two quotations both say “loop feed” and still need different reviews?

Yes. Compare the actual drawings, switch functions and exclusions rather than the category wording alone. Any difference should be accepted by the responsible engineering reviewer before treating the quotations as equivalent.

Does a remote indication option include remote operation?

Do not assume that it does. Ask the supplier to describe the precise indicated information, commanded functions and interfaces included in the offer. Record any additional equipment or integration work separately.

What if the project one-line is still preliminary?

Label the enquiry and supplier response as preliminary. List the decisions that remain open, then require the supplier to confirm the final configuration and any commercial changes after the approved requirements are available.

Can an existing transformer's description define a replacement?

Use existing information as a starting point, not a complete acceptance record. Provide the available drawings and project requirements for engineering review, and identify missing or outdated information before requesting an equivalent replacement.

Does HEAKOR's product category confirm a particular switch package?

No particular switching, transfer or control package is confirmed by a category page alone. The proposed configuration, available documentation and any project-specific compliance requirements must be reviewed for the actual enquiry.

Prepare a focused enquiry for HEAKOR

For a three-phase oil-immersed pad-mounted transformer enquiry, include the project one-line, required switching functions, serving utility specification, transformer electrical requirements and requested document list. Identify preliminary information clearly.

Submit your project specification to HEAKOR with the switching and control scope highlighted. Ask for confirmation of the offered configuration and exclusions before making a purchasing decision.
