Removable Transformer Radiators: Interface and Supply Scope

Removable Transformer Radiators: Interface and Supply Scope

A removable transformer radiator should be ordered against an approved interface drawing and a defined cooling-system duty, not a photograph or nominal size alone. For a liquid-filled substation transformer, the review should establish mechanical fit, thermal-design acceptance, insulating-liquid and seal compatibility, and the exact parts included. A matching flange arrangement does not, by itself, approve cooling performance. This guide helps procurement teams organize those decisions before accepting a quotation.

Define what the radiator quotation covers

Start by distinguishing a complete transformer cooling package from a replacement radiator assembly or a limited component request. These enquiries need different evidence and can allocate design responsibility differently.

For a new transformer, identify the radiator arrangement within the transformer's approved cooling design. For a replacement, reference the existing equipment identification and the drawing revision being replaced. For a component-only enquiry, list precisely what is requested, such as the assembly or separately identified interface items. Do not assume that the phrase “radiator set” includes every valve, gasket, fastener or support needed for the project.

For broader equipment context, see the power-class substation transformer category. A component enquiry still requires its own feasibility and supply-scope confirmation; a transformer category listing is not evidence that a particular replacement part is available.

Use a controlled drawing to review mechanical fit

The interface drawing should identify the exact offered assembly and its revision. Ask the responsible engineer to compare the connection arrangement, flange geometry, connection center distances, orientation, supports and surrounding clearances with the approved transformer arrangement.

A supplier's statement that an item is “equivalent” needs a documented comparison. Record any difference and the person responsible for accepting it, rather than leaving procurement to infer whether it matters. A photograph can help identify an enquiry, but it cannot resolve hidden dimensions, material requirements or the approved design basis.

IEC 60076-22-2:2019 covers removable radiators for liquid-immersed power transformers and reactors. Its public scope includes preferred interchangeability dimensions and testing. That scope is not a universal interchangeability guarantee: the project's applicable requirements and actual interface still need to be checked. This guide does not reproduce the standard's dimensional tables or claim that a particular assembly complies.

Keep thermal acceptance separate from dimensional acceptance

Ask who is responsible for confirming that the offered radiator arrangement is suitable for the transformer's specified cooling duty. The purchase record should point to that engineering acceptance, rather than treating an outline-drawing approval as approval of every performance requirement.

For a replacement enquiry, disclose whether the requirement is to retain the original arrangement or evaluate a change. Changes to the assembly, installation envelope or cooling configuration should be visible to the design reviewer. Do not infer an acceptable transformer rating from radiator panel count, nominal surface area or visual similarity.

The practical purchasing question is: “Which document confirms that this assembly is accepted for this transformer and duty?” If the answer remains unresolved, keep it as an open technical item before commercial acceptance.

Identify the liquid, seals and valve requirements

The enquiry should name the insulating liquid and the service conditions that the component supplier must evaluate. Request explicit material and seal compatibility for the offered configuration, rather than relying on a generic description such as “oil-resistant.”

Valve requirements also need their own specification. A radiator-valve technical catalog illustrates different sealing constructions and material-dependent permitted conditions. This older manufacturer document, marked revision 06 dated 22 March 2011, is an example of why those distinctions matter, not a current project acceptance criterion. Obtain the offered component's current documentation and agreed inspection requirements.

Keep the radiator interface review distinct from the conservator and breather supply boundary. Related equipment may share a project, but approving one package does not settle the other.

Put inclusions and exclusions into one acceptance record

A short scope schedule makes competing quotations easier to review. For every line, record the document reference and whether the item is included, excluded, supplied by others or awaiting confirmation.

Review item Evidence to request Decision to record
Radiator assembly Identified drawing and revision Exact assembly and quantity accepted
Mechanical interfaces Connection, flange, support and clearance details Fit accepted; deviations listed
Cooling-design applicability Configuration-specific engineering review Responsible reviewer and acceptance status
Liquid, seals and valves Specified materials and current component documentation Compatibility and requirements resolved
Interface hardware Itemized valves, gaskets, fasteners and blanking items Included, excluded or by others
Inspection and delivery Agreed inspection scope and shipping documentation Evidence, responsibilities and outstanding items

Also state whether the assembly is factory-fitted or supplied separately, and who provides approved preservation, handling and installation documentation. This article gives no instructions for draining, valve operation, assembly or oil filling. Those activities require the equipment-specific documentation and qualified personnel.

Questions buyers ask before releasing the order

Can photographs be used when the original drawing is missing?

Photographs can support initial identification, but record the drawing as missing. Ask the responsible engineering parties what verified information is needed before they can approve a replacement; do not present a photograph-based enquiry as an approved interchangeable part.

Should spare gaskets be included in the purchase?

List them explicitly if the project requires them. Identify the accepted part, material and quantity through the approved component documentation, and ask whether they are included or separately quoted.

What if the supplier proposes a different coating or seal material?

Record the proposed material as a deviation for review against the specified environment and liquid. A commercial substitution should not silently replace an unresolved engineering decision.

Does a separate shipment change the agreed equipment scope?

It should be clarified in the quotation and delivery documents. Record the supplied items and documentation responsibilities without assuming that freight packaging, site work or installation services are included.

What should be sent with a radiator enquiry to HEAKOR?

Provide the transformer identification, available approved drawings, requested quantity, liquid and service conditions, and a clear description of the requested supply. Availability, replacement compatibility, documentation and any component or OEM scope must be confirmed for the specific enquiry.

Prepare a reviewable enquiry

Use the technical-documents page as the supporting route for configuration information. Then submit the drawing and requested supply scope to HEAKOR for review. Identify missing evidence openly and request confirmation of what can be offered before treating the enquiry as an accepted replacement solution.
