Pole-Mounted Transformer Mounting: Single-Phase Drawing Review

Pole-Mounted Transformer Mounting: Single-Phase Drawing Review

Review a single-phase pole-mounted transformer mounting interface against the purchaser’s support drawing and the supplier’s dimensioned equipment drawing before approving the order. Compare the hanger arrangement, mating geometry, installed weight, terminal orientation and hardware supply scope. Matching kVA and voltage does not establish mechanical interchangeability. This guide is for U.S. utility, distributor and EPC buyers preparing a 60 Hz overhead-transformer purchase; the responsible engineer must accept the support arrangement and any departures from the project specification.

Start with the mounting arrangement, not a catalogue photograph

The first question is what the transformer must connect to: the specified pole hardware, an existing support assembly or a newly designed arrangement. Identify the utility construction drawing, revision and applicable equipment configuration. For replacement purchases, distinguish original records from the information the utility or project team has verified about the existing installation.

Public utility documents show why this detail matters. Snohomish County PUD’s 12F601STL assembly, Revision 2, addresses steel poles with steel distribution support arms and directs a different support-arm arrangement to another assembly. It also states that transformer and cutout support-bracket mounting bolts must be ordered separately. Those are requirements for that assembly, not a hardware package to copy into every U.S. order.

Ask each bidder to identify the proposed transformer-side hangers and the mating hardware separately. Make clear which components are supplied with the transformer and which are purchased by the utility, contractor or another supplier.

What does IEEE C57.12.20 establish?

IEEE C57.12.20-2023 covers specified electrical, dimensional and mechanical characteristics of certain 60 Hz, liquid-immersed, self-cooled overhead distribution transformers. Its public scope includes single-phase and three-phase equipment within stated rating and voltage limits.

Name the required edition in the RFQ and ask the supplier to identify the applicable mounting provisions and any deviations. The public abstract does not provide a complete dimensional specification. This guide therefore gives no universal hanger spacing, bolt size, load rating or installation clearance. Use the applicable standard together with the project requirements and accepted equipment drawings.

Seven drawing checks for the mounting interface

Request enough views and details to compare both sides of the connection. The following is a suggested procurement checklist, not a standards-mandated drawing format. Record the requirement, supplier response and reviewer’s disposition for each item.

Check Information to request Question to close
Mounting configuration Hanger or support-lug identification, quantity, arrangement and referenced mating assembly Is the offer based on the support arrangement the purchaser specified?
Mating geometry Dimensioned hanger detail, mounting locations, hole or slot geometry, contact faces and required tolerances Are both drawings describing the same physical interface?
Dimension references Units, datums and the exact features between which dimensions are measured Does “spacing” mean hole centers, slot references or another defined feature?
Equipment envelope Overall dimensions and views showing bushings, terminals, accessories and projections relative to the mounting side Can the designer review fit and access against the actual support layout?
Weight and support inputs Installed weight, included fluid/accessories and any center-of-gravity or mounting-load information requested by the support designer Does the structural review use the offered configuration rather than a similar catalogue unit?
Hardware boundary Itemized brackets, adapters and fasteners, including items supplied loose or supplied by others Is every mating component assigned to a purchaser and a specification?
Drawing identity Offered design reference, drawing number, revision and status Will the reviewed interface be the one incorporated into the ordered equipment?

Keep lifting provisions separately identified. A lifting lug and a service-mounting hanger answer different questions; do not treat a feature’s appearance in a photograph as evidence that it can perform both functions.

Separate transformer fit from support approval

A matching interface drawing can support a fit review, but it does not complete the design of the pole or support assembly. Assign the transformer supplier’s equipment-information scope and the responsible support designer’s review scope explicitly. Ask the designer which weight, geometry and loading inputs are needed for the actual site.

If an adapter or altered hanger is proposed, request its drawing, supply responsibility and the required engineering review before accepting the substitution. A statement that an adapter “makes it fit” does not resolve the supporting structure, equipment attachment or applicable utility acceptance. Field alterations and installation methods belong in approved engineering and equipment instructions, outside this purchasing checklist.

Make drawing approval a defined purchase milestone

Agree when the interface must be accepted and what information remains preliminary. Hanford’s HNF-59583 Revision 3 transformer specification, section 155.1, clause 1.6.1, provides a bounded procurement example: it calls for outline drawings, specifications and exceptions to be reviewed before manufacturing. That June 2023 document concerns Hanford’s specified equipment and system, rather than every utility purchase.

For your order, identify the documents required before manufacturing release and the party authorized to accept deviations. If a later revision changes hangers, weight, tank dimensions or accessory positions, ask which previously accepted interfaces need another review. Preserve the accepted revision and the change disposition in the purchase record.

Buyer FAQs

Can one mounting drawing cover several kVA ratings?

Only rely on it where the supplier identifies which configurations it covers. Ask for rating-specific differences in geometry, weight and accessories rather than assuming that a shared product-family name establishes the same interface.

Can an existing pole bracket be reused?

Reuse needs acceptance by the responsible utility or project designer. Supply the available bracket identification, condition records and verified installation information, then compare the proposed transformer against the accepted reuse requirements.

Are inches and millimeters interchangeable on submittals?

They can describe the same geometry, but the drawing must identify its controlling units and tolerances. Ask the supplier to resolve rounded conversions or conflicting dimensions rather than choosing the value that appears to fit.

Is a photograph enough for a replacement quotation?

A photograph can help identify the arrangement for an initial enquiry. It cannot establish hidden dimensions, tolerances, weight or the acceptance status of existing hardware; mark the quotation conditional while those inputs remain open.

What if the transformer and hardware come from different suppliers?

Give both suppliers the same interface reference and assign responsibility for each mating component. Require a coordinated response to discrepancies so that an item excluded by both suppliers does not disappear from the purchase scope.

Does an accepted mounting drawing establish overall utility approval?

No. Record exactly which interface the acceptance covers, and retain the separate electrical, documentation and utility requirements in the purchase specification. Drawing acceptance also does not authorize installation or energization.

Prepare a focused HEAKOR RFQ

Start with HEAKOR’s single-phase pole-mounted transformer enquiry page. The technical document centre helps identify the drawings and records to request; availability must be confirmed for the proposed configuration.

Request a Quotation with the required kVA, primary and secondary voltages, 60 Hz duty, quantity, U.S. destination and delivery schedule. Include the utility specification and revision, support drawing, replacement information if relevant, hardware supply boundary and required drawing-approval milestone.

Ask for a proposed configuration, itemized supply scope, drawing deliverables and explicit deviations. Mark unresolved dimensions as TBC. HEAKOR equipment suitability, mounting details, documentation and commercial terms require project-specific confirmation.
