Transformer Shipment Impact Indicators: Dry-Type Acceptance

Transformer Shipment Impact Indicators: Dry-Type Acceptance

Transformer shipment impact indicators provide evidence about the monitored shipment's handling; they do not, by themselves, diagnose a dry-type transformer's condition or complete technical acceptance. Before accepting the equipment or closing a transport exception, identify the device, its monitoring coverage and the record it actually provides. Have the responsible technical authority resolve the condition question under the agreed acceptance plan. Keep an untriggered indication within that same review rather than treating it as an equipment guarantee.

This guide is for North American industrial buyers and EPC procurement teams agreeing evidence requirements for a dry-type transformer shipment. It applies when an impact indicator or logger forms part of the proposed monitoring plan. It does not prescribe a universal monitoring device, threshold, inspection method or electrical test.

What does an activated impact indicator establish?

An activated visual indicator signals an event within that device's response characteristics and warrants review. The published impact-indicator technical data, revised December 2025, explains acceleration and event-duration response curves. The related QR indicator documentation describes its visual activation as an alert of possible damage. Neither description diagnoses the transformer's internal condition.

The same document treats its selection guide as a starting point, with product fragility and packaging also relevant. A label's designation therefore cannot become a universal transformer acceptance limit. Ask the supplier to explain the selected device's purpose and its applicability to the actual equipment and package. Leave conclusions about internal condition to the transformer design authority.

Why does an untriggered indicator leave acceptance work open?

An untriggered indication answers the device-status question within the documented monitoring coverage. It does not establish that every contractual condition has been met. This is a procurement inference from the indicator's defined response and the separate equipment examination requirements, not a manufacturer's guarantee of damage-free delivery.

Confirm that the record belongs to the specified device and shipment, then apply the agreed condition-acceptance plan. If coverage, activation or mounting information is missing, record that gap. Avoid interpreting missing evidence as either proof of damage or proof that the transformer remained unchanged.

Distinguish an indicator, a QR scan and a logger

Request the evidence format before comparing records. A visual status, a digital observation and a logger's recorded history can support different questions. Preserve those distinctions in the procurement file.

Suggested evidence distinctions for a dry-type shipment review
Record Information to request Interpretation boundary
Visual indicator Device identity, observed status and applicable instructions A status observation is not a full event history.
QR scan Original scan entry, timestamp, location and associated device identifier Identify whether time and location describe the scan.
Electronic logger Native recording file, recording period, configuration and interpretation documentation Check what the actual logger recorded and which interval it covers.

The QR indicator product documentation describes reporting condition status, location and time when the device is scanned. A later receiving scan should therefore not be relabelled as the time or location of the impact. Request supporting history before drawing that conclusion.

A cast-resin transformer operating manual, August 2026, Section 5.5, separately describes damage examination and optional transport vibration loggers for its named transformer series. The manufacturer may request recorded data during a damage review. That example does not establish a logger requirement or supply commitment for HEAKOR equipment.

Transformer shipment impact indicators: evidence checklist

Issue a short monitoring-evidence schedule tied to the proposed shipment. The following fields are a suggested purchasing tool, not mandatory standard report fields:

  • Coverage: transformer identifier, package reference and the part of the journey the monitoring plan addresses.
  • Device: type, model or serial reference, current instructions and selection rationale supplied by the responsible party.
  • Deployment: installation location, initial status, any required arming record and the person documenting them.
  • Record delivery: photographs, original scan entries or logger files as applicable, with an identified recipient and delivery milestone.
  • Exception review: notification route, technical reviewer, required disposition record and authority to close the acceptance item.

Ask each bidder to identify included deliverables, exclusions and unresolved requirements. A quotation saying only “shock indicator included” leaves the monitoring and document scope incomplete. Use the project technical-document requirements to organize the wider submission.

Turn an exception into a documented decision

Include overview and close-up photographs that link the observed device status to the package and transformer identifiers. Label the observation time separately from any recorded event time. Assign an owner and a response date to each open acceptance item.

Preserve the observed status and obtain a disposition linked to the actual transformer. Send the responsible reviewer the device record, shipment identity, applicable monitoring instructions and the available condition evidence. Record uncertain information explicitly rather than reconstructing an event time from memory.

Ask the reviewer to state what the evidence supports, what remains uncertain and which further assessment or information is required. Any inspection or work must follow separately approved, design-specific instructions. Procurement should track the decision and its closure evidence without inventing a test sequence or declaring the unit fit for service.

Keep physical receipt, contractual notices, technical acceptance and permission to energize as separately identified milestones. Use the existing dry-type receiving and storage handover guide for the wider custody and protection record. This impact-evidence review adds a focused acceptance question.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose indicator sensitivity from transformer kVA?

Do not use kVA alone as the selection basis. Request the responsible supplier's rationale for the shipment, equipment fragility and packaging, using the selected device's documentation. This guide recommends no numerical sensitivity.

Can an indicator on an accessory crate cover the transformer?

Do not extend one package's observation to another by assumption. Ask the monitoring plan to identify the equipment and package covered by each device, and keep a transformer-side evidence gap visible.

What if a label is replaced during transit?

Request the original device record, the reason and time of replacement, and the new identifier and deployment record. Have the reviewer assess the resulting coverage gap; a replacement label should not silently overwrite the earlier history.

Does a factory test report close a transport exception?

A factory report supports its stated tested condition and date. Retain it as relevant background, then obtain the separate disposition of the transport evidence. Use the test-report identity guide to keep the records linked to the supplied unit.

Must every dry-type shipment include a continuous logger?

No universal requirement follows from the cited examples. Agree the required evidence with the supplier and project reviewer before order, considering the proposed shipment. Confirm whether a logger and its records are actually included.

Include the evidence requirements in your enquiry

Start from the HEAKOR dry-type transformer enquiry page and describe the destination, electrical duty, procurement stage, shipment arrangement and monitoring documents requested. Identify the reviewer and acceptance milestone. Monitoring devices, records, assessment services and supply scope require confirmation for the specific proposal.

Submit Your Project Specification for a requirements review. Include your proposed monitoring-evidence schedule and open questions so the response can identify the equipment scope, document availability and points needing confirmation.
