Transformer Neutral Grounding: NGR Supply Scope

Transformer Neutral Grounding: NGR Supply Scope

AI-generated industrial illustration for this transformer neutral grounding guide; not a photograph of HEAKOR equipment or a project, and not an engineering drawing or approval.

For transformer neutral grounding with an external resistor, define the neutral connection and resistor-package boundary before comparing offers. Identify the winding and neutral point, the approved grounding requirement, the physical connection information and the parties supplying the resistor, conductors, monitoring equipment and documents. A transformer rating or a note saying “NGR by others” leaves important interface decisions unresolved.

This guide is for EPC engineers and procurement teams purchasing a three-phase oil-immersed substation transformer for an IEC-specified industrial project, including projects in Vietnam where that basis is expressly required. Confirm the actual frequency and destination requirements. The guide does not decide whether resistance grounding is appropriate, calculate resistor ratings, specify protection settings or authorize a change to an existing grounding system.

Start with the approved grounding concept

The project's electrical engineer must establish the grounding arrangement. Procurement should request the governing one-line diagram, design basis and specified neutral duty rather than selecting an arrangement from a supplier catalogue.

The IEEE overview of neutral grounding devices explains that device selection is linked to the broader power-system grounding strategy and protection coordination. It also distinguishes a grounding transformer used to establish a neutral from equipment connected to an available neutral. That distinction matters commercially: an external resistor package should not be assumed to solve a missing or unsuitable transformer neutral point.

Ask the transformer supplier to identify the offered winding connection and the neutral terminal that would serve the agreed design. Have the project engineer confirm whether the information closes the interface or whether another design decision remains. Do not change neutral bonding or connect equipment in the field on the strength of a purchasing checklist.

Separate resistor requirements from transformer requirements

Record what each package must demonstrate. IEC 60076-25:2023, edition 1.0, applies to dry-type, naturally air-cooled neutral grounding resistors using metallic resistive elements. Its public scope covers resistor characteristics, service conditions, tests and marking. The scope does not establish that an associated transformer, protection scheme or complete installation has been approved.

The reference to a dry-type resistor does not describe the construction of the main transformer. In this article the purchased main transformer is oil immersed; the external NGR is a separate item. Keep the resistor's standard and evidence alongside, rather than in place of, the main transformer's specified standards and project acceptance records.

The responsible engineer should provide the required electrical duty and applicable service conditions to the resistor-package supplier. Where a requirement is unresolved, identify it as TBC and state which commercial or design decisions depend on it. This guide intentionally supplies no resistance, current, voltage or time-rating defaults.

Define the transformer neutral grounding supply boundary

A useful boundary identifies where the transformer supplier's work ends and where the external package begins. Ask the parties to use matching equipment tags and drawing references so that a neutral terminal on one document can be located on the other.

Suggested neutral-to-resistor package responsibility record

Scope item: Transformer neutral

Owner to identify: Transformer design owner and project electrical reviewer

Scope item: External resistor

Information to agree: Engineer-issued requirement, offered configuration, applicable standard and exceptions

Owner to identify: Resistor-package supplier and approving engineer

Scope item: Physical interconnection

Information to agree: Connection drawing, mating details, route constraints and supply endpoints

Owner to identify: Package and installation designers

Scope item: Monitoring where specified

Information to agree: Included sensing equipment, document handover and interface to the site system

Owner to identify: Protection/monitoring package owner

Scope item: Site work

Information to agree: External conductors, supports, installation and verification scope

Owner to identify: Named contractor or purchaser-appointed party

Scope item: Acceptance records

Information to agree: Required drawings, declared duties, tests, review milestones and unresolved points

Owner to identify: Purchaser's authorized technical reviewer

These rows are procurement recommendations, not a prescribed IEC schedule. Assign actual parties rather than leaving each row “by others.” Where one contractor owns several rows, keep the technical boundaries visible so that subcontracting or a later package change does not obscure responsibility.

Confirm physical fit without inventing a connection design

The transformer neutral-terminal detail and the external connection detail should be reviewed together. Request the dimensions, interface materials and environmental information that the responsible designer needs. Establish who supplies the mating hardware and who approves the complete arrangement.

A useful clarification request is: “Please identify the drawing and supplied parts at the transformer neutral handover point, including the items excluded from this offer.” That request is more actionable than asking whether the transformer is “NGR ready,” a phrase that can hide different assumptions.

An illustrative purchasing gap is an external resistor included in one quotation while neither package includes the interconnection or its detailed design. Resolve the gap by assigning scope and obtaining coordinated documents. The example does not establish that HEAKOR supplies NGR equipment, installation services or any particular neutral configuration.

Keep protection acceptance separate from package completeness

Receiving all listed components does not prove that the protection design is suitable. Have the responsible protection engineer identify the required review inputs and acceptance evidence. If monitoring equipment is specified, ask its supplier to declare the supported configuration and the interface information required from the transformer and site packages.

Keep detailed CT procurement in the bushing-CT interface review where applicable, instead of copying a generic CT ratio into the NGR enquiry. A later change to the transformer winding connection, neutral arrangement or external package should trigger review of the affected documents, not automatic reuse of the previous approval.

Frequently asked questions

Does an accessible neutral mean an NGR can be added?

No suitability decision follows from accessibility alone. The electrical engineer and equipment design owners must assess the proposed grounding arrangement and the actual transformer and system requirements.

Is the resistor automatically included with the transformer?

No. Require an explicit included/excluded scope statement. The external resistor, monitoring package, interconnection and site work may be separate purchases.

Can a standard number replace the duty schedule?

No. A standards reference identifies an assessment basis, while the project still needs its specified duty and offered equipment information. Confirm the required edition and any project-specific deviations.

What if a grounding study is not yet complete?

Keep the affected requirements provisional and assign an owner and review milestone. Ask the authorized engineer which procurement steps can proceed and which must wait; do not fill the missing duty with typical catalogue values.

Send a focused transformer-side enquiry

For a HEAKOR substation transformer enquiry, provide the destination, phase/frequency, required kVA or MVA, winding voltages, project specification and available one-line diagram. Add the engineer's neutral-grounding requirement and identify the external-package owner.

Submit Your Project Specification and ask which transformer-side configuration and documents can be evaluated. Use the document centre to organize the request. Availability, supply scope and final technical suitability require confirmation for the particular project; no external NGR supply or engineering approval is implied.
