Buchholz Relay Gas Sampling: Ground-Level Package Scope

Buchholz Relay Gas Sampling: Ground-Level Package Scope

AI-generated conceptual illustration for Buchholz relay gas sampling. The disconnected accessories do not show an installed or approved sampling arrangement, a HEAKOR product or an operating procedure.

Specify ground-level Buchholz relay gas sampling as a complete, reviewed extension assembly. Identify the relay served, proposed remote collection device, connecting tube, mating fittings, seals, mounting parts and supports. Record what is supplied, who completes the installation and who accepts the arrangement. The selected equipment's instructions and the transformer design must support the proposed combination; a familiar connection size does not establish compatibility.

This guide is for EPC and procurement teams buying conservator-equipped, mineral-oil substation transformers for IEC-specified projects. It concerns an optional gas-sampling arrangement, not a universal transformer requirement. It provides no valve-operation, gas-testing, fault-diagnosis or live-work instructions.

Define what the remote device is being purchased to do

Specify access to gas collected by the identified Buchholz relay, rather than a generic “ground-level sampling point.” A remote device of this kind connects to the relay; it is not automatically the transformer's designated oil-sampling outlet. The official gas-sampling device description documents one tube-connected arrangement for sampling relay gas at normal operating height.

Keep the purpose separate from oil analysis. The public scope of IEC 60567:2023 covers free-gas sampling from gas-collecting relays and gas analysis; it directs oil-sampling techniques to IEC 60475:2022. These scope statements do not approve an accessory combination. For the different liquid-sampling purchase task, use the transformer oil sampling points guide.

Compare the complete gas-sampling extension, not the device price

Ask each bidder to return the same component-and-responsibility schedule. Treat an unspecified item as an open question, not as automatically included or excluded.

Relay association

Information to request: Transformer tag, relay identity and the drawing showing the intended connection

Remote collection device

Information to request: Exact model, options, supplied functions and applicable manual revision

Tube package

Information to request: Designer-specified material, dimensions and required length; included or separately supplied status

Connection hardware

Information to request: Itemized mating fittings, adapters, seals and protective closures for the agreed assembly

Mounting and supports

Information to request: Device bracket, fixing hardware, tube supports and the party supplying each

Completion boundary

Information to request: Factory-fitted versus separately packed parts, installation responsibility and required acceptance records

The distinction is real, not just contractual wording. One manufacturer operating manual, sections 4–5 lists a device-with-tube package including an adapter and gasket, but excludes tube clamps. A different manufacturer manual, page 1 and drawing 3619 identifies supplied joints while making the tube a separate order. These are examples for the documented models, not standard package contents across manufacturers.

For bid comparison, request the cost and responsibility for closing each exclusion. A lower device price cannot establish the lower completed-package price while tube supply or mounting hardware remains unresolved.

Require acceptance of the relay, device and route together

Request written technical confirmation for the exact proposed combination. Include the relay connection drawing, remote-device reference, tube specification and proposed route in that review. Do not approve an alternative solely because its connector appears to fit.

The selected manual may impose conditions involving the conservator level, tube route and installation geometry. Have the transformer designer check those conditions against the proposed arrangement. This article deliberately supplies no universal tube diameter, maximum length, mounting height or routing angle; values from one model's manual must not become another model's purchase specification.

A substitution should reopen the affected entries in the schedule. Ask the supplier to identify changed parts, drawings and instructions, then obtain the responsible engineer's disposition before releasing the revised scope. An accepted original device does not automatically establish acceptance of a replacement.

Review access without granting permission to work

“Ground level” describes a location, not approval to perform a task. Ask the site designer and owner's appointed operations representative to review the proposed service position, approach space, surrounding obstructions and any requested protective enclosure. Record their comments against the actual layout rather than a catalogue photograph.

The applicable equipment instructions and the owner's authorized safety procedures govern later work by qualified personnel. Do not use the existence of a remote connection as permission to sample an energized transformer, operate a valve or bypass access controls. Likewise, do not attach a downtime-saving or safe-live-sampling guarantee to the purchase description.

Close the document package before handover

Keep the approved assembly drawing, component schedule, selected manuals and responsibility record together. Identify loose-shipped components against the transformer tag and agree who records completion of the remaining work. Request the verification documents required by the approved project procedure without inventing a test method in the purchasing checklist.

Use HEAKOR's technical document centre to organize the requested records. Missing documents should remain explicit open items with an owner and an agreed resolution milestone. A delivery note listing “gas sampler” does not close an unresolved connection or support responsibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is a remote gas-sampling device mandatory on every conservator transformer?

No universal requirement is established here. The project specification, selected transformer arrangement and responsible engineer determine whether this option is required.

Does a gas-sampling extension replace the Buchholz relay?

No. The arrangement discussed here provides a remote interface associated with the identified relay. It is not a substitute for the project's protection equipment or protection-design review.

Are sampling containers and analysis services included with the device?

Do not assume they are. List any required collection equipment or analysis service separately and obtain explicit scope confirmation from the relevant supplier or service provider.

Can an existing transformer be fitted with the same package?

A retrofit needs its own review. Provide the existing relay identity, available drawings and site arrangement; unresolved compatibility or operating requirements cannot be settled by copying a new-transformer accessory list.

Include the requested package in your HEAKOR enquiry

For a substation transformer enquiry, provide destination, rating, winding voltages, phase/frequency, mineral-oil and conservator requirements, project specification, quantity and schedule. Add the requested ground-level gas-sampling scope and any relay or layout information already available.

Submit Your Project Specification to request review of the proposed configuration and unresolved supply boundaries. Component availability, compatibility, documentation and commercial scope require written confirmation; this guide does not promise a supplied gas-sampling kit or site service.
