Dry-Type Transformer Inrush Data: Protection-Coordination Handover

Dry-Type Transformer Inrush Data: Protection-Coordination Handover

Dry-type transformer inrush data should identify the proposed transformer, the current definition, the energization conditions and the evidence behind the result. For a U.S. EPC or procurement team, the useful handover is a traceable data package that the protection engineer can use in the project study. A current multiplier without its base, time information or application conditions leaves important questions open. Agree the required format and delivery date before the supplier's technical offer is accepted.

This guide addresses three-phase, 60 Hz dry-type transformer procurement for U.S. distribution projects. It is a documentation checklist, not a method for choosing breaker ratings, fuse sizes, relay settings or an energization procedure.

What should dry-type transformer inrush data describe?

The data should describe the transformer’s magnetizing current during energization, with its stated conditions. Core design, residual magnetism and the point on the supply waveform when power is applied influence the event. That makes an unexplained catalog value a poor basis for assuming that two offered transformers have the same energization behavior.

Keep transformer energization separate from motor starting and other downstream load events. Ask the engineer which events belong in the study, and ask the supplier to identify whether the submitted information represents the transformer alone or a stated loaded condition.

Define the current before comparing the number

Ask exactly what the reported current means. An instantaneous peak, an RMS value calculated over a defined interval, and a multiplier referenced to rated current are different descriptions. Retain the supplier’s definitions and have the protection engineer confirm how the information will be used.

  • Quantity: peak amperes, an explicitly defined RMS value, a current-time envelope or another identified representation.
  • Reference: the winding side, phase or line-current basis, and rated current used for any multiplier.
  • Time: the time origin, units and interval associated with each value or curve.
  • Meaning: whether the result is typical, a stated maximum, a design estimate or a contractual limit, including applicable qualifications.

A label such as “maximum inrush” still needs an explanation of the conditions and method behind that maximum. Do not silently relabel a peak-current figure as RMS or convert it using an assumed waveform.

Build one handover record for the offered configuration

Use a short document register that links every inrush submission to the same equipment and drawing revision. The following fields are a proposed buyer checklist, not a prescribed test form.

Dry-type transformer inrush data: procurement handover fields
Record Information to request
Transformer identity Equipment tag, proposed model or design reference, kVA, winding voltages, three-phase rating and 60 Hz frequency.
Connection Connection drawing revision, winding being energized, tap position and the configuration covered by the data.
Energization basis Applied voltage, stated supply conditions, residual-flux and switching assumptions, and the condition of the other windings or connected loads.
Current and time Defined current quantity and base, time information, units and the requested curve or data-file format.
Evidence Calculation or test reference, method, issue date, revision, applicability statement and limitations.
Review status Supplier response, engineering reviewer, open questions, due date and acceptance status.

For alternative connections or an intended step-up application, ask whether the evidence covers the actual proposed arrangement. Do not assume that data for energizing one winding also validates energizing another. Use HEAKOR’s technical-document review resources to organize the wider document request; availability must be confirmed for the proposed model.

Distinguish a calculation, a test and a guarantee

Label the evidence by what it actually establishes. A calculated curve is not a measured waveform. A measured record supports its documented test conditions, while a contractual limit requires an agreed definition and verification basis.

If the supplier provides a calculation, request the design reference, assumptions and stated applicability. If it provides test evidence, request the identifiable report and enough information for the engineer to understand the tested configuration and measurement basis. If only family-level information is available, ask for a written explanation of its relevance to the offered transformer.

Do not assume that a general routine-test report includes the inrush information needed for the study. Agree any additional calculation, measurement, witness requirement or reporting deliverable before order, including responsibility, timing and commercial scope.

Keep the protection study and acceptance decision with the engineer

Procurement should deliver the evidence and track missing responses; the responsible engineer evaluates it against the project’s protection requirements. Protective-device coordination involves the actual devices and their time-current characteristics, transformer energization, and the wider system conditions. An inrush submission alone does not approve the protection scheme.

Have the engineer identify the utility, standby-source, transfer or other operating cases requiring review. Record who supplies the one-line diagram, source information and protective-device documentation. A proposed source arrangement or equipment substitution should be referred back for assessment rather than treated as already covered.

Specify the applicable product standard and edition separately. For example, the official IEEE C57.12.01-2020 scope includes dry-type distribution and power transformers with 601 V or more in the highest-voltage winding. That scope should not be applied indiscriminately to low-voltage-only units, and a standards reference does not supply model-specific inrush evidence.

Close revisions before the data handover is accepted

Ask the supplier to identify whether a revised transformer design changes the previously submitted inrush information. Keep the final submission, its qualifications and the engineer’s disposition together. Record outstanding items explicitly rather than treating a missing attachment as an accepted assumption.

A useful closeout entry states which configuration was reviewed, which document revision was used, what remains conditional and who owns the next action. This creates a clear procurement handover without implying approval to energize equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Is a percentage-impedance value enough for the inrush handover?

No. Request separately identified inrush evidence with its current definition and energization basis. Leave any modeling relationship or additional data requirement to the transformer designer and protection engineer.

Must every offered transformer have an individually measured inrush curve?

Do not assume a universal requirement. Agree whether the project accepts design calculations, applicable design-test evidence or a specified measurement, and record the engineer’s acceptance criteria before ordering.

What if the supplier provides only a typical multiplier?

Keep the item open and ask for its rated-current base, current definition, applicable configuration and time information. The engineer should decide whether that evidence is sufficient for the intended study.

Does submitting inrush data confirm generator or UPS compatibility?

No. Request a separate review of the actual source, transformer and operating arrangement. Inrush information is an input to that review, not a system-compatibility declaration.

Can procurement resolve nuisance tripping by changing a protective device?

Refer the event to qualified electrical personnel and the responsible engineer. This checklist does not authorize equipment changes, altered protection settings or repeated energization attempts.

Include the inrush evidence request in your HEAKOR enquiry

Review the HEAKOR dry-type transformer enquiry range and provide the U.S. destination, kVA, winding voltages, phase, frequency, connection, site conditions and available one-line diagram. Add the engineer’s required inrush-data format, operating cases, document deadline and applicable specification.

Submit Your Project Specification to discuss the proposed configuration and documentation scope. Ask the response to identify available evidence, exclusions and items requiring confirmation. Inrush calculations, test records, performance commitments and project suitability require confirmation for the specific proposal.
