High-Altitude Dry-Type Transformer: What to Specify

High-Altitude Dry-Type Transformer: What to Specify

High-altitude dry-type transformer specifications should state the installation elevation, cooling-air conditions and required continuous output. Ask the manufacturer to confirm both thermal performance and insulation requirements for the proposed design at that location. A kVA rating without its service conditions is not enough to decide whether the unit meets the project duty.

This guide is for buyers, EPC teams and electrical contractors preparing IEC-based specifications for industrial or commercial projects. Its discussion of IEC 60076-11:2018 is limited to dry-type transformers with a highest voltage for equipment, Um, up to 72.5 kV and at least one winding operating above 1.1 kV. Check the standard's full scope for special transformer types; do not apply these provisions automatically to all-low-voltage units.

The governing standard, local requirements, final design and installation instructions must be confirmed for the destination and proposed transformer. These standard references do not establish that a particular HEAKOR design meets the site conditions.

Why altitude belongs in the first enquiry

Declare the actual installation altitude when requesting an IEC-based quotation. For dry-type transformers within its scope, IEC 60076-11:2018 clauses 4.1 and 4.2(a) refer to Part 1 for normal altitude conditions. IEC 60076-1:2011 clause 4.2(a) sets 1,000 m as the upper altitude for normal service conditions. The dry-type provisions of Part 11 then address relevant conditions beyond that basis.

IEC 60076-11:2018 clause 5.3 requires the purchaser to identify unusual service conditions in the enquiry, including altitude beyond the normal conditions and restricted ventilation. The specification for unusual service conditions is subject to agreement between purchaser and supplier. State those conditions early so that the quotation records the agreed design basis. See the official edition records for IEC 60076-11:2018 and IEC 60076-1:2011.

Confirm continuous output under the site conditions

Start with the load the project must serve continuously, then ask the supplier to state the available output at the actual elevation and cooling-air temperature. The quotation should identify the cooling arrangement, enclosure and temperature-rise basis used for that answer.

Separate self-cooled and fan-assisted ratings. If the offer includes both, ask which rating meets the normal duty and what operating assumptions apply to the fan-assisted rating. Request the required supply, controls and installation conditions for any fan equipment included in the offer.

IEC 60076-11:2018 clause 10.3 addresses temperature-rise limits for transformers designed to operate above 1,000 m and tested at normal altitude. It distinguishes natural-air and forced-air cooling, unless otherwise agreed. This provision concerns temperature-rise limits; it is not a universal percentage reduction in kVA.

Ask the manufacturer to state the continuous output for the actual site and quoted configuration, and to explain the design and test basis behind that answer. Record any agreed exceptions in the technical schedule. A generic online correction should not become an assumed HEAKOR performance value. Refer to clause 10.3 of IEC 60076-11:2018 for the applicable conditions.

Review insulation and the connection layout separately

Ask for the specified insulation withstand levels and the manufacturer's confirmation of their suitability at the installation altitude. Include the highest voltage for equipment and the required impulse withstand level where applicable. Keep the units and the governing specification clear in the quotation comparison.

IEC 60076-11:2018 clause 11.2 identifies the reduction of air dielectric strength with altitude and requires this to be considered for designs operating above 1,000 m. When operating and test altitudes differ, the correction described there applies to the applied voltage test only, not to other dielectric tests. Do not turn that provision into an automatic BIL or lightning-impulse correction. Conditions above 4,500 m require separate agreement. Refer to clause 11.2 of IEC 60076-11:2018.

Request a drawing that identifies clearances around live parts, terminals, busbars, cables and grounded structures. Ask the manufacturer and project engineer to confirm the drawing and installation instructions for the actual altitude and connection arrangement. Keep the design reference and any altitude-related conditions with the approved layout. Use the instructions for the proposed design rather than copying another product's clearance table.

If the offered enclosure or terminal arrangement differs from the project drawing, resolve the difference before accepting the equipment layout.

Prepare a high-altitude dry-type transformer RFQ

Provide the following information with the single-line diagram and the relevant project specification. Mark uncertain inputs as items to confirm so that suppliers can identify their assumptions.

  • Location and elevation: actual installation altitude above sea level, with units and the source of the site information.
  • Cooling-air conditions: expected temperatures at the transformer, indoor or outdoor installation, room arrangement and enclosure requirements.
  • Electrical duty: required continuous kVA, voltages, frequency, phases, vector group, taps, impedance requirements and relevant load characteristics.
  • Insulation requirements: specified withstand levels, governing standards and any project or utility requirements.
  • Connection and access: cable or busbar arrangement, available space, maintenance access and the current layout drawing.
  • Environment: humidity, condensation, contamination and exposure conditions requiring review.

For the broader enquiry inputs, use the transformer RFQ checklist. When cooling-air conditions depend on an electrical room, the room ventilation heat-data checklist helps organize the separate building review.

Compare offers on the same basis

When comparing high-altitude dry-type transformer offers, check whether each supplier answered for the same elevation, ambient conditions, enclosure, duty and connection arrangement. Record the proposed model or design reference, continuous output at the site, cooling basis, insulation confirmation and any exceptions to the specification.

Ask the supplier to explain any alternative offered to meet the duty, such as a different rating or configuration. Keep that explanation with the quotation. An unresolved altitude assumption should remain visible in the bid comparison rather than being treated as a confirmed performance value.

The accepted technical schedule, approved drawing and operating instructions should use consistent design references. At handover, compare those references with the unit identification and the scope of the supplied reports. The test-report traceability guide provides a record-checking approach.

Submit your project specification to HEAKOR

Explore HEAKOR's dry-type distribution transformer category, then include the site altitude, cooling-air conditions, electrical duty and specification in your project enquiry. Ask whether a proposed design can meet those conditions and what supporting documents apply. Suitability for a particular high-altitude installation requires confirmation for that design.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dry-type transformer operate above 1,000 m?

The answer depends on the proposed design and service conditions. Give the manufacturer the actual elevation and obtain confirmation of the continuous output, insulation requirements and installation instructions for the site.

Should I simply buy a larger kVA rating?

Ask the supplier to explain the design needed to meet the required duty. A larger nameplate rating alone does not resolve the insulation and connection-layout review.

Does a cooler mountain climate settle the cooling question?

Provide the actual cooling-air temperature as well as the altitude. Ask the manufacturer to assess the combined conditions rather than assuming that a lower outdoor temperature confirms the available output.

Does adding a fan remove the altitude review?

Request confirmation of the output and conditions for the offered fan-assisted design. Keep the insulation and clearance confirmation as a separate item in the technical schedule.

What should I send before requesting a quotation?

Send the site elevation, cooling-air conditions, electrical duty, single-line diagram and project specification. Include the proposed enclosure and connection layout, and identify inputs that still need confirmation.
