Dry-Type Transformer Enclosures: Check IP and Rated Duty Together

Dry-Type Transformer Enclosures: Check IP and Rated Duty Together

Dry-type transformer enclosures need a coordinated review of enclosure protection, thermal performance and the proposed transformer configuration. Before ordering, ask for the proposed enclosure drawing, evidence supporting its stated protection degree, and the thermal-performance basis for the transformer operating inside it. Match all three to the same rating, cooling arrangement and installation conditions. An enclosure IP claim does not, by itself, establish the transformer's usable kVA or suitability for the proposed location.

AI-generated enclosure-panel illustration, not a HEAKOR product photograph or evidence of IP classification, thermal performance or an approved assembly.

This guide is for EPC engineers and procurement teams buying three-phase dry-type distribution transformers for IEC-specified industrial installations. It addresses enclosure procurement and configuration approval, not room-ventilation design or instructions for modifying installed equipment.

What does an enclosure IP rating establish?

An IP designation describes a degree of protection provided by an enclosure. It is not a complete transformer performance specification. The official scope of IEC 60529:1989+AMD1:1999+AMD2:2013 concerns enclosure protection classifications for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72.5 kV. The code should therefore be accompanied by the applicable edition, the assembly it describes and the evidence the project requires.

Keep the IP requirement separate from rated output, temperature rise, climatic and environmental classifications, corrosion protection and project approval. Those questions need their own acceptance basis. A supplier's statement about a cabinet cannot silently become evidence that the enclosed transformer satisfies every site condition.

The procurement question is: “Does the protection claim cover the enclosure that will actually be supplied, and is the transformer duty supported in that configuration?”

Define the enclosure configuration before comparing offers

Use one configuration schedule to connect the enclosure to the transformer and the site. The following is a proposed buyer review format, not a substitute for the project specification.

Review item Information to request Decision it supports
Equipment identity Transformer design reference, rated output, voltages, frequency and cooling designation Which transformer does the enclosure proposal cover?
Enclosure identity Drawing number, revision, dimensions, construction and required IP degree Are competing offers based on the same assembly?
Openings and interfaces Ventilation arrangements, cable-entry plates, terminal interfaces and any specified filters or fans Which openings and components are included in the protection claim?
Installation conditions Indoor or outdoor position, ambient conditions, altitude and contamination or wetting concerns Which site assumptions must the supplier address?
Rated duty in the enclosure Proposed continuous output, temperature-rise basis, cooling conditions and any stated restrictions Is the quoted output supported with this enclosure fitted?
Scope boundary Enclosure supplier, site-installed components and party responsible for final configuration review Who closes the interfaces before acceptance?

Identify items supplied separately rather than assuming that an enclosure price includes every gland, termination box, filter or control component. A missing interface should remain an open question, not an implied inclusion.

Request separate protection and thermal evidence

Keep two evidence lines in the technical comparison: enclosure protection and transformer performance in the enclosure. A response that addresses only one leaves the other unresolved.

For protection evidence, request the report or assessment reference, the enclosure identification, the relevant configuration and any stated conditions. Ask the reviewer to reconcile differences between the evidence and the offered drawing, particularly where the project adds cable entries, ventilation components or separate terminal compartments.

For thermal evidence, request the manufacturer's stated basis for the enclosed transformer's proposed output and operating conditions. Identify the applicable test or assessment, the design it covers and any qualifications. If a report concerns an unenclosed transformer or another enclosure arrangement, ask how it supports the offered combination instead of assuming equivalence.

IEC 60076-11:2018 addresses dry-type power transformers with a highest voltage for equipment up to and including 72.5 kV and at least one winding operating above 1.1 kV, subject to its stated exclusions. Its published revision summary specifically identifies enclosure-related performance. The responsible engineer should confirm applicability and the contractual edition. A catalogue reference is not a clause-by-clause compliance assessment or evidence for a HEAKOR model.

Does a higher IP rating always require derating?

Do not apply a universal derating percentage from the IP number alone. Require the supplier to state the output supported by the proposed transformer-and-enclosure combination under the specified conditions. Treat “full rating retained” and “reduced rating required” as design-specific responses that need a documented basis.

This matters when an enclosure option changes after a price comparison. If the revised option affects the air path, cooling equipment or installation assumptions, ask for a written review of the affected performance and documents. Do not approve the revision solely because its protection designation appears more demanding.

The aim is not to choose the highest-looking code. It is to obtain the required protection and the required transformer duty in the same accepted configuration.

Keep the enclosure review separate from the room design

A supported enclosed-transformer rating does not demonstrate that the surrounding room can maintain the required conditions. Hand the confirmed enclosure arrangement, losses and installation requirements to the building-services designer. Use the separate dry-type transformer room-ventilation checklist for that handover.

Likewise, use the C, E and F class evidence guide when the project specifies climatic, environmental or fire-behaviour classifications. Do not use an IP entry to close those separate requirements.

Before configuration approval, reconcile the enclosure drawing, transformer schedule, evidence references and supply boundary. Record who reviews subsequent changes. This is a procurement document check; enclosure alterations, access and installation must follow the approved project process and manufacturer instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can the EPC purchase the enclosure from a different supplier?

The proposal needs a coordinated review rather than two disconnected purchases. Agree who is responsible for the completed transformer-and-enclosure arrangement, which documents demonstrate its suitability, and who resolves interfaces. Do not assume that an empty-cabinet report establishes the performance of the finished equipment.

Can I request a quotation before the enclosure requirement is final?

Yes. Identify the site conditions and label the enclosure requirement as provisional. Ask the offer to state its assumed construction, supported duty and open technical points so a later change can be reviewed before order confirmation.

Does an IP designation settle a condensation concern?

Do not treat the designation alone as an answer to the site's humidity and condensation conditions. Describe those conditions separately and request the proposed measures and supporting scope. Keep any required environmental-class review distinct from the enclosure protection entry.

What should I request if the quotation says only “protective enclosure included”?

Ask for the enclosure drawing and revision, the claimed protection degree, the included interfaces, and the transformer's supported duty in that assembly. Until those items are clarified, the phrase is not a complete basis for comparing offers.

Submit the enclosure requirements with your transformer enquiry

HEAKOR's dry-type transformer category and dry-type product page provide an enquiry path for the proposed equipment. They do not establish an available IP rating or enclosed thermal performance for every configuration.

Use the technical document centre to organise the requested drawing and evidence. Then Submit Your Project Specification with the required rating, voltages, phase, frequency, destination, installation conditions, enclosure requirement and open interfaces. Ask the proposal to identify its equipment scope, supporting-document scope and unresolved assumptions. Configuration, evidence availability and commercial terms require project-specific confirmation.
